University Club Ink Sketch Available for Purchase

Anne Sayers created this ink sketch in 1991 of the historic University Club building on the Virginia Tech campus. Reproductions of this beautiful piece are now available for purchase in two different formats.

About the Building: The Grand and Iconic University Club, 1929-2018

The University Club of Virginia Polytechnic Institute was formed in 1925 when 52 Virginia Tech faculty and other community members, representing 26 leading colleges and universities in the country, came together to provide an opportunity for scholarly social interaction between town and community. The stately University Club building was designed by architect C. H. Cowgill, and was completed in 1929. The upper floors included 30 rooms for boarders and guests including graduate students and single faculty members. The Club hosted a variety of events, including wedding and academic receptions, dances, visiting artists, bridge parties, and holiday socials as well as social hours, poetry readings, seminars, receptions, and pre-game brunches. The basement “Emerald Room,” including a bar room, lounge, and dance floor, was added in 1985 and was designed by Warren Kark, Virginia Tech’s campus architect. University Club members have included business people, professionals, and retirees from the community as well as Tech faculty and staff members. The demolition of this grand historic building took place in the winter of 2018. The land beneath it was reclaimed by Virginia Tech for its “Creativity and Innovation District” vision.
